WASTE LAND wins Audience Award at IDFA

Dutch and international audiences at IDFA 2010 selected Lucy Walker’s WASTE LAND as their favorite documentary from about 300 films screened during the eleven days of this year’s festival. The Public Broadcaster IDFA Audience Award comes with a cash prize of 5,000 Euros.

IDFA audiences have good taste. Last year’s IDFA Audience Award winner, THE COVE went on to win the 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary. WASTE LAND has already been included on the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences’ shortlist for the 2011 Oscars. WASTE LAND is also on my list of this year’s best documentaries.

WASTE LAND follows Brooklyn, NY-based Brazilian-born artist Vik Muniz on his creative odyssey to Rio de Janiero, where he photographs garbage pickers at the world’s largest refuse dump and, with his subjects’ help, creates marvelous art works with which he transforms their lives.

IDFA audiences gave WASTE LAND an overall approval rating of 9.18 out of 10. Second in the ranking was….
